Re: How many pumps before my primer bulb gets hard?
I would say that thirty (30) pumps is too many. There are two (2) valves within that primer bulb, one of which (or both) may be failing.

The primer bulb works best when it is held in a vertical position with the outgoing portion facing up.
Re: How many pumps before my primer bulb gets hard?
Usually takes me no more than 10, and this has been the experience with all the boats I've owned. One thing I've noticed, however, is that if the fuel tank is 1/4 or less, it takes significantly longer to prime. I'm not sure why.
Re: How many pumps before my primer bulb gets hard?
Depends on how long the fuel lines are if they are short it will take less pumps & vice versa also if the tank is low it will take more pumps as the fuel level is further from the bulb. The bulb should be firm.Hope this helps.
Re: How many pumps before my primer bulb gets hard?
Should the fuel bulb actually get "hard"??

I recently replaced mine with a Tempo brand, and no amount of pumping will make it rock-hard.

I figured it was a defective check valve and went to buy a new one.

Upon inspection at the store of a few on the rack, it appeared that the check valve is designed to allow a bit of backflow.

Am I correct in assuming that this is to deliver enough prime, while preventing pump diaphram blow outs from overzelous pumping??

Or am I way off base??
