How many raw water intakes does a V8 need?

Hi fellow iboaters:

I'm going to be putting a GM diesel 6.2 liter V8 in my 1977 Luhrs 28', and I noticed the hull has 2 scoop-strainer raw water pickups. It originally had a single Chrysler 360 V8 from the factory.

My question is, forget for a moment that I'm putting a diesel engine in, for a typical inboard Chevy 350 would it usually have 1 raw water thru-hull or 2? If the answer is only one is needed I'm going to plug-n-epoxy over the 2nd one, as I really don't want any more thru-hull fittings than needed.

What do you guys think? Is there any advantage to having 2 scoop-strainers Tee'd to the raw water pump?

redundancy, if you pick up a piece of debris, trash or weeds you could restrict your water flow if you had only one scoop and cause an over heat issue.

What gear ratio are you going to run? If you are running the same as what was in there you will lose much speed with the diesel. Gas engine RPMs 4500
Diesel RPMs 2500-3000.

What they said... Why plug it, it give you redundancy and diesels run at a lower RPM...
