Re: how many rods

That is a broad question. What type of fishing are you doing? My experience is mostly inshore fishing: light (10-12lb) and medium (15-20) weight spinning reels/rods, conventional (20lb-30lb) rod/reels. I generally take two of whatever combo I plan to fish with (1 for backup) and then take 1 heavier rod/reel just in case :D. Each person on the boat generally does the same- 2 rods.

Re: how many rods

I bring two rods for each person fishing. One for what we are targeting and one more either up or down in size from what we brought.
Always bring one good size (Penn 4/0) just in case we stir up a shark or two.

Three. Papa bear, Mama bear and Baby bear. If you are saltwater fishing, you never know what you will run into.

Re: how many rods

Trolling Stripers I use 16 rods.
Trolling Bluefish and Spanish Macs I use 6
Bottom fishing I take 6

I have storage for 6 rods in the racks in the gunnel and room for 4 more in rack in the cabin. I typically keep 6 trolling rods onboard at all times.

Re: how many rods

I keep six rods on board. On med-heavy 36 lb lead line Penn rig for trolling, two med spinners, one heavy spinner for snagging bunker, a Penn 3/0 with 20lb big game mono for chunking, a med with 20lb braid on a 5600 abu and a gaff.

Then I carry on anything else I might need.

Nets buckets etc, the things that smell.

Re: how many rods

Lets see... 2 conventionals and 2 spin for trolling, 4 rods for bottom fishing, 1 good size conventional rigged for surface live bait, 3 lighter spinning rods for run n gun, armed with jig, spoon and small to medium popper, and 1, sometimes 2 rod w/ Sibiki rigs. That's 12-13, I really need to install a radar arch for more room, and so I could bring more rigs! It's better to just grab a already rigged rod when an opportunity arises that to change and rerig.

Re: how many rods

I normally have 4 people on board.
2 rods for each person .
All rods are 6 or 7'.
I use Penn SS-5500 & Penn Level winds.
All lines are Pro-line @ 50# test, .017" dia.
Also use circle hooks.
But you must be alert when on a drift whils 8 lines are in, you might want to just use 1 rod per person to avoid tangles !!!

Re: how many rods

Usually we have 4-5 rods per person on my boat. Which is usually 8-10 rods. I like fishing light in the boat, more room for fish!!

Re: how many rods

Too many and not enough - usually at the same time. My buddies and I try to keep re-rigging to a minimum in the heat of battle. This usually means at least two fly rods per man (most often rigged with intermediate and deep sink lines), a medium weight spin rod per - serves double duty as a bluefish rod and a searching rig to get on the fish before we start throwing the fly, and during tuna season it's two heavy spin rigs per man. If we're going to troll (not how we like to do it), the rod count goes up from there. Five rods each can add up pretty quick - and it's not long before you have a pile of graphite that is larger than the sum of it's parts.

But hey, I'm a gear hound with an addiction. The only (temporary) treatment is more rods.
