AO-51 Shellback Greetings, bro!!!!!!!!!!! Small world! Squid here from 69-71 ,but I only served on Ashtabula for one 3 month deployment in '71... You just answered a nagging question I had about where She went (Pearl) in '75..I had heard that, but didn't know for sure. Was "Happy Ash", that always emtpy ice machine still keeping his post in '75? :)

And the loverly aroma and taste of BALU! Nummy stuff!! :D

My memories of the Philipines are a haze -- but then again, they were quite foggy at the time, too :) ('cept for that smell of balu). I can still smell it. Oh wait -- I still have my dirty socks on. :)

It sure is good to hear from someone who walked the same decks, isn't it?
I had a shipmate in town, and even werked with him for about a year, but he moved-on. He told me that he thought the Ash was working from Pearl, but he wasn't sure. That was around 1980 or so.

Thanks, bro. I really would appreciate those pics a lot. I had a bunch of pics and memrabillia stuff, but tossed it very early-on. My exit from the USN was not a memory I wanted to harbor at the time. Still a sore subject at family reunions. We live and learn tho.

WOW...I realize I'm way behind the power curve on this thread but I just found this site yesterday and saw the Ashtabula. I felt I just had to answer.

I was on the Ash from 74 - 76. Made the 75 cruise but we never crossed the line and I had to leave her a Wog. Finally crossed the line on the Connie CV64 a few years later so, yes, I'm an honorable Shellback.

There's a few sites online that have pics of her being sunk. She put up a heck of a fight and had to be finished by individually placed explosives. If anyone wants (if anyone reads this) I'll be glad to pass along some URLs. By the way, I was right out of boot camp and A school waiting for her on the pier at Pearl Harbor in July 74 when she crossed the pond from Long Beach to make PH her new homeport. I loved the ship hated Hawaii.

Was never on the Ashtabula but was stationed aboard the USS Merrill (DD976). Became a trusty shellback in 1987.

Nice to see there are some real Navy vets here. Was stationed at Wiawa (Spelling) Naval tracking station before going to Mare Island and then Nam.Scofield ( spelling) barracks were $1.00 a night when we got to go downtown.

Ex Army here, but my father was on the USS Springfield CLG-7 in the late 60's and early 70's. I was born in '71, and he was stationed in Naples, Italy then. His birthday is next week and I just received his birthday present in the mail.

Hopefully he'll enjoy it! If there are any other USS Springfield members out there, let me know. My dad organizes the annual reunion, I can put you in touch with him.

Go ARMY!
