how many volts to turn over a 93 90hp evinrude v4?

how many volts to turn over said motor? my fishfinder diagnostic said 12.2v but that wasnt enough to kick the starter over.12.4v has done it in the past
anyone know?

12 volts, but the full power of the battery is needed at the starter, so if the cables and connections are not in excellent condition, the starter won't work.

You can usually find the problem by touch, because the area of resistance will get hot.

You should also have the battery load tested at your battery store.

If you have a good DC voltmeter, you can perform a voltage drop test to find the weakness.

BTW, if all your battery can show is 12.2 after charging, you need a new battery.

Voltage is really just telling you how much of a charge you have left in your battery. A fully charged 12v battery should read about 12.8 volts. What's really turning the starter is the Amps that it is able to put out.

If you look on the battery it will have a rating in CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) or MCA (Marine Cranking Amps). The higher the number of Amps the battery is rated for the more force it can crank your motor over with.

You should check all your battery connections and make sure that they are all clean and tight. Then hook the battery up to a charger and let it charge fully. If the battery won't crank your motor over when it's fully charged you need to replace it. Likewise, if the battery goes dead fairly quickly and won't hold 12.6v at least then you should replace it.

the higher the cca number the more force availible to turn your motor over. if you had a properly sized battery to start with, a bigger one will not make it crank any faster. however it would allow a longer cranking time

take a meter to the battery if you dont want to load test it. use the meter and the starter to load test the battery.

Volts are one thing. You need 12 of them. Amps are the measurable for cranking the motor. You need to crank at least 300 RPM to fire it up. Poor or bad connections or cables will detract from a perfectly good battery.
Many times the battery or starter motor is falsely blamed for starting issues when the root cause is a cable or connection.

or bad cell in battery, if in question have the battery load tested at auto parts store, usually free.
