I am currently reading "Under the Banner of Heaven" which is at least partially about Mormon polygamy in the 19th century and Fundamentalist polygamy even now. Very interesting read so far. It is apparently well known that Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion had 30 - 40 wives

While on his journey to Nevada,Mark Twain wrote a book called "Roughing It". He stopped over in Utah and wrote a beautiful tongue in cheek report about a family of one father,80 mothers and countless children.About how hard it is not to show favoritism and having to give equal time and love to each wive and child.The poor father has to build a bed that holds 81 people and he can never give a present to one child.He always has to give an identical present to each of his children.In the end Twain mentions the goodness of these mormon men by stating that many of these women are very lucky to be married at all, since most of them looked homily indeed and without these mormon men they would never have entered marital bliss.

When they pass that law thier going to have a lot more men in the state of Chechnya. I predict a mass immigration to Chechnya.

I'm not so sure.I remember having to juggle 2 girlfriends.It is very exciting but it is not an experience I would ever want to repeat.

The interesting thing about polygamy to me is the math. With the exception of a Chechen type rationale i.e. dwindling male population, doesn't the whole thing fall apart unless you assume (insert your favorite man to wife ratio here) 9 out of 10 guys just won't get married? <br /><br />Seems like it would really suck to be one of those 9 guys . . .

Yup. That's why I wonder what those other nine guys think of the deal. As I understand it, the Mormons believed (past tense, don't throw anything) that God demanded that they take multiple wives. At some point you have women shortages, it is just obvious . . .

To my knowledge, in comparison to our popular cultural expreiences, this can only work to a minor degree in a society where the role of the female is much less insubordinate.

In Canada their is a study looking into Legalizing<br />polygamy.I heard it on talk radio only yesterday,<br />Seems the Mormon group from Bountiful in British<br />Columbia is being discriminated against, as well<br />as legal immigrants because their beliefs or religion<br />allows it in their country of origin ,and once<br />entering Canada they are breaking the law by having<br />multiple wives and can be charged under the criminal<br />code. So it is under review after being lobbied by<br />a human rights group.

I think polygamy is inevitable if you allow gay marriage. What's the difference? Everybody is happy, right?<br /><br />Bountiful is one of the strongholds of the Fundamentalist Mormons. There and the Arizona "strip" which is the area between the Grand Canyon and Utah. I also understand that they are not well thought of by the official Mormon Church based in Salt Lake, and the primary point of contention is polygamy.

Why do you have to be married to have children? Look right here in the good 'ol U.S. of A. Is anyone in South Central or Detroit actually married? Well, maybe some are....However, since I am a helpful kind of guy, I would be willing to lend a hand with the problem....or whatever parts necessary... .....JK

I had a friend in the Navy that came from a mormon family that believed in poligamy. His dad had 3 wives.<br /><br />He said his dad told him that if you have one wife, she wants to run everything. If you have two wives, they constantly fight to see who is top wife. If you have three wives, two will gang up on one and there will be peace in the family. <br /><br />Sorta sounds logical in a weird way.

I would bet that many of you here would not at all mind having multiple wives, if it was permitted by your respected religion, and had it not been against the law where you live.
