I really wonder how much gas most keep in their tank while not on the water.
In my case I had been fixing and testing my new to me used mako so i had it running off a five gallon extra tank.but this nice Tx heathas caused a lot of vapor buildup. As I used another five ballon tank to start filling the boat I noticed it was very ouffy as I pused the release handle a rush of vapor shot out Scary,

** Will stabile and 2 cycle oil get along in my tank and Johnson 112?

i run usually half a tank down at a time...thats about 1-2 days of swimming and tubing for us. on the way out next time, i fill all the way up. so basically, i never put in without a full tank. that way if we decide to cruise far at the last minute or something, im prepared. and for the heck of it, i have always used 89 octane in my 305. just got in the habit, and never put anything less in it. so far so good.

When I leave the water, my tank is usually pretty close to empty.

I never know when the next outing will be, and with the short shelf life of gasoline, I figure it's cheaper to let an almost empty tank go bad than a full one.

So it stays empty until the next trip out. I fill up the truck and the boat enroute to the water.

Fill it up right before getting into the water.

Use about half tank per outing.

Boat stays with that half tank until next outing.

Repeat as needed:D

I usually fill up the night before I go out while I'm prepping, checking oil etc. In hurricane season I leave it full all the time in case a big storm comes. Gas stations are usually closed for a week or so after a storm and having the 134 gallons onboard is great for the truck, generator or whatever.

Back in d time when I did not have to worry about money I would fill the tank in my way back. Nowadays I fill in on my way in. I'm generally end up using only one tank per outing.

If it's going to sit up for a few weeks at a time, I'll leave whatever is in the tank and fill up before I put in.
For winter storage, I fill the tank, add stabilizer, and button 'er up.
Fortunately around here we have two stations that sell straight gas with no ethanol.

Unless you have a very large tank and are on a very large body of water where condensation seems to be an issue, it really doesn't matter how much fuel is in the tank and for how long -- provided it is treated with a fuel stabilizer like Sea Foam or Stabil. What is recommended is that you have a water separating fuel filter installed if you don't have one. Whatever fuel is left in the tank when I get home is what remains until I fill at the next outing.

I guess I have been doing it wrong, but I like to keep half a tank unless I'm going for a long trip. I've never run out of fuel, but have run low.

Re: How much gas do you keep in your tank when not on the water?

A full tank leaves no room for condensate. ;)

Exactly, but my boat stays in the water 360 days a year it is hauled spring and fall for a couple days for maintanence. I fill it up on the way back to the slip as long as the fuel dock is opened if not i fill up on the next outing. The boet also has two 110gal tanks so if you leave it below 1/2 for too long condensation becomes a problem. and I always wear my sunglasses at the fuel dock so no one can see me cry.:D

i always have full tank before putting boat in the water. no matter what happens i dont want to be stuck out on the water due to a lack of fuel, and in my area the marinas are much more expensive than where i fill my vechicles.

I usually go out with 3/4 of a tank and come back with 1/4 - 1/2 depending on how much cruising/tubing we do. The toon has a 55gal tank

I keep it full all the time (80 gallon hull tank) and treated. This reduces condensation. I fill up within a few days of using it (moored in the water) but if I haev ot on a trailer, I fill it. You all should fill on your way home.
For your small tanks, at least store them out of the sun. When I run a 6 gallon tank, unmixed, I dump the leftover in my car.
Bugsbunny, learn about your vent cap on your tank. You can study it when you take it out of the boat and put it under cover somewhere.
