My family's got an old boat from around 1970 I can use if I want. And I want.
But which size engine will I get away with using?
It's a very small boat - 11' - and the specs from the manufacturer says it's 335 cm. long, 145 cm. wide and 63 cm. "deep". It weighs 98 kg. The factory specs also say up to 18 hp. You can see the boat for yourself here: http://www.skibsplast.no/arkiv.htm. It's boat no. 2 in the left hand column (called "Junior 11' m/dekk"). The hull is the same as the one called "Junior 11'".

An engineer at the factory has told me that he thinks the boat can handle 30 hp, but he won't recommend it. Some years ago we used it with a 20 hp Mercury from the early 80's without any problems.

How much hp can I put on this boat without killing myself - and still be able to get it out of the water? My guess is 30 hp and no more than 60 kg. What do you think?

Any help and opinions very welcome.

Sincerely Kristian

Thanks everybody. You've convinced me that I might be a bit eager killing myself. So I'll just go with a small engine. The transom still seems very firm and doesn't show any sign of damage from the 20 hp. overpowering. Any other way to check this than pulling it hard with my hands.
