How much is this motor worth?

I found an ad for a mid 70's model Evinrude 9.5 motor with a tiller handle. The guy says the motor runs fine he just switched it out on his boat for a go-devil motor. It does not have a gas tank or fuel line, but I have one off another 9.5 Johnson that would fit it. The price is $350, I know that description is kind of broad but what would you pay for a motor around that age and description? Any input would be appreciated.

Depends largely on where you are, but if it really does run fine that sounds reasonable. However, you'll want to verify the age. It's been my experience that many sellers are guessing and are often off by several years. Not necessarily saying he is, just sayin'. Also, depending on the actual age it may have the shear pin configuration. I've had two Johnnyrudes with shear pins and never again, but I spend a lot of time in shallow rocky rivers. One more thing; you might want to have a mod move this to the non-repair outboard discussion section. You're likely to get more input there.

sounds like a good price to me.

And i don't mind shear pins--but I'm in sand and mud.

Sometimes motors that old work great but can't be repaired b/c the bolts are all frozen; something to be aware of.

Yeah, they're fine in that kind of water. Drive you stark raving mad in a tailwater river though, especially if you're in a stretch that you don't know like the back of your hand.

I had one of those I think in the Johnson fisherman model which I ran for years. Beware that parts may be very hard to purchase now because of the age. I would check out suppliers of common replacement parts like impellers,coils,points and props before considering the purchase. I had a spare for parts so the $50. purchase was well worth it.I sold it after 4 years and the owner is still using it!!!!!!

Common repair parts for the 9.5 are easily available here at IBoats and elsewhere.

The soft parts are not hard to find. Make sure to do a compression check before buying it. If it's good the rest is fixable. $350 is getting up there. I'd expect a perfectly running engine for that price. The 9.5's were made from mid 60's to mid 70's.

I paid $300 for a '69 Johnson 9.9 9 years ago so that is a pretty good price given everything checks out.

Check it yourself and don't trust the sellers word, some have been know to tell a story or two.

I assume you mean a 9.5hp? As they didn't start making the 9.9's until 1974.

The 9.5 OMC motor is an oddball in comparison to all of their other motors. The design is very different than anything else they made and there isn't much in the way of parts interchangeability bewteen it and other models. Some parts are still available and some are not. Its also a difficult motor to work on.

IMO, $350 is way too much. I wouldn't pay more than $200 for it, even if it is in pretty good shape.

DANG, I got ripped twice then, the guy told me it was a 9.9 it was also in a barrel and started right up after I bought it the guy offered to load it for me.

I found out why when I got home as it had a really big crack in the lower, I had been looking for a long time and this was the first engine I found so I JB welded it and all was well, as far as I kow the guy I sold it to is still using it.

I have gained a bit of knowledge since then I believe.

Don't worry, I got totally ripped off on my first engine also. I was totally green. Guy told me it was a 9.9. I questioned it but believed him. Took it home and researched the model number and it was a 1959 5.5hp! Duh. At least it was only $75! Oh well, that was probably 100 engines ago or so... Now I can take em apart and put em back together blindfolded probably!

Well..Those 5.5's in my honest opinion were some of the best ever made,..I actually think you made out!
