Re: how much juice?

Alot of the older chyrsler 55HP dont have charging systems. Post your model number. I believe one of the numbers in that number tells weather or not it has an alternator or some other charging system.

Re: how much juice?

well now the plot thickens a little and i might as well know now. when i bought the boat( few months ago) there was one complete motor and one that was apart basscally everything but the motor, the complete motor shows a #4551 which is a 45hp i have the hood too and the other is the 55hp #5553 but looking at the remains and using normal logic it looks like the 55 was put on the 45 lower but im not 100% so how do i know what do i look for to tell which it is, and what are the other poss charging systems? basically what are the poss options, i have one or the other right? forgive me i know nothing about boat motors and enjoy reading every post on 55-45 chryslers and plan to get a manual soon thanks

Re: how much juice?

The lower units are interchangeable between the 35,45 and 55. The model number you need is located by the carburator. Probably next to the cowling latch in the front of the motor. I will be going to the library this weekend. The chiltons marine book has the info concering the numbers versus the meaning. I will try and let you know saturday. I am guessing from your post that the motor on your boat has the powerhead with the number 5553. Looks like that motor is about 1968 or 1969. Good to see those old motors still running.

Re: how much juice?

the 4551 is a 45HP and the 5553 is a 55HP. Kind of sounds like Johney Cashs song "One piece at a time" Check on the barrier stip on the motor where all the wires are hooked up. Does the purple wire from the harness connect to a rectifier? IF it just goes to the block without going anywhere on the motor I doubt you have a charging system. The 4551 number would be like 45581 where the 8 would be the charging. For a tach you would use the white wire and ground. The wire should be located around the key ignition switch. It is probably just hanging down not being used.
