hi.. newbie here.. i have a 1967 Falcon Wildcat tri hull 14ft.. has a 1967 Johnson V4 60 hp on it.. ran across a 1984 Johnson V4 90hp for sale with trim and lift.. is that motor too much motor for the wildcat boat??? either hp or weight.. the 90 looks about the same size as the older 60.. thanks in advance..

Yes too much,Almost 100 lbs heavier at 300 lbs.And 50% more hp.
You would be better off with an 84 60 hp almost 40lbs lighter than the 67
and a more efficient operation. There may be tag on the transom with the
rating I'm betting about 60 hp.

thanks for your reply.. i have yet to see a transom tag on the boat.. i am guessing there is some one out there to trade me an engine i can use for this 90hp.. it runs really good...

Re: How much motor is too much??

The other thing to consider is that a 67' vintage boat is not likely up to taking the same stress as it was when new. (Stress cracking, internal wood rot, etc is common in a 40 yr old boat). I remember we had a 72' vintage 14' glass runabout / 40 merc rig at the family property for years. When the motor finally died, a friend donated a early 80's 65. Second time out the transom caved/split while underway. We made it to shore but we were ankle deep when we got there :)

Chapman's Piloting,Seamanship, and smallboat Handling 1974 edition has a chart on page 555 withtables for safe OBM HP ratings.

I do have a question or two.

!. When I am writing a reply, up in the right hand corner is a notation which reads "Logged in as Clam Biter", but when I hit the submit button I get sent to a disclamer page which says that I am NOT logged in and I have no right to be there. What gives??

2. Several times I have wanted to writ a reply but the thread is closed. So do I start a new thread and if I do, How do I do it?

And How do I do a quote? That is if I really felt the need for one.
