I am looking at a 1994 9.9 evinrude tracker. I want to use the motor on a 12 foot by 36" wide flat bottom jon boat. Is that enough power to use in the bay? I don't want to zip around but I want to be able to move around comfortably.
I don't know anything about the subject as this would be my first outboard. I'm getting tired of rowing. ;)

Re: how much power for jon boat

it sounds like an awful lot of power for that boat. i bet it has a rating of 5 or 6hp.
i have a 14 foot by 48 inches and it has a rating of 7hp, but i have a 14hp evinrude and it really flys. its pefect for when its loaded with me, wife and gear or dog, but when im by myself, its actually scary. but ive learned to get over the fear!

i think your boat will be plenty fast with a 9.9.

but honestly, if you could find a 6hp sincle cylinder, youd save weight and youd still have plenty of go power.

before i got the 14hp, i used a 5hp nissan wich still put the boat, loaded, up on plane.

hope this helps

What bay? Bay as in ocean? If so, the whole set up sounds "puny".

36" wide boat. Yikes. I hope you don't weigh too much. I would probably flip it if I sneezed too hard. I used to use a 7.5hp outboard on a 12ft gamefisher and it would plane nicely.
