Hi, I have a 58 johnson qd19. Replaced the clutch dog and have to put the skeg back on. Do I completely fill the cavity with scotch weld before adding spaghetti gasket? Do I pit the gasket first? Do I put the scotch wrld on the other part that fits together with the skeg? Also, I understand that I should put abit of scotch weld on the bolt, is that right? Specific instructions would be appreciated as I don't know much about rebuilding motors yet. Thanks!

Re: how much scotch weld on skeg

Here is some information that was given to me by hightrim when working on what I thought was a 1968 18 hp (turned out it was really most likely a 71 lower unit, but I would think this information would be pretty universal for the older motors)

There was actually a different product recommended for the bolts, but personally when I redid mine, I just put scotchgrip on the them too, and it seems to have sealed up just fine.

Do as the page says. Too much goop is probably better than not enough. It won't cause any damage. But it would make a messy, unprofessional looking job.

Thank you both for the quick qnd helpful response. I did as it said and it worked. I let it sit overnight snd there was no oil leaking in the morning.
The motor is great.
