I got a guy that wants to sell me a late 70's 40hp evinrude with only like 40 hours on it. What would be a ballpark figure on it?

I'm assuming the forty hours is on a rebuild. Who rebuilt it and how long ago are a couple of questions I would ask.

Heard this before..wheres the proof. Have it running, and run well, then do a compression check...fine tooth comb here..good motor's...but owners are the problem..

even if it's original hours, there are parts that are going to have to be serviced, especially if it has been setting up. all rubber hoses. impeller. carb kit, possible electrical. even after that it is still a 1970's motor. i would not pay over $500, for a perstine one.
