Hello all

I am curious to know, how much it should cost to get someone to repaint my aluminum hull. I mean I want it to be stripped down to the bare aluminum, and then repainted. I understand there are certain steps in order to have it done, but what is the usual price? I live in Canada, so I don't know if that helps at all. Also I noticed the interlux website mentions using sandblasting to strip a hull. Strange, I figure it would pit the surface....

Just guessing we're in the 16 to 18 foot range? Lot of variables come into play - what type of paint, how much prep needs to be done, etc. I would recommend you look around for someone who can soda blast that hull instead of regular ole' sandblasting. Same process as sandblasting but the inert material is just plain old bicarbonate of soda. Works just as well. The cost may be different.

Yeh, you don't "sandblast" aluminum. It will be ruined. Media blasting is an option.

Ayuh,....

The Only way you're going to get a Reliable answer is to drag it to a few Body Shops for estimates.....

Sandblasting doesn't ruin aluminum. It WILL, however, mess up an aluminum boat hull though. (won't hurt thicker alum though).
It gets the surface hot and warps/distorts the metal.
As I saw posted above, best to use another medium if blasting, sand it, or strip it.

From there, it really makes no difference how nice of a job you want done. If you are paying a body shop to do it, there are not many shops that will inentionally cut corners to save you a buck. They are afraid you won't like the finished product and complain.
If you walked in here and told me to "scuff and shoot", I'd send you elsewhere. (if you know that much about it, do it yourself).
One things for sure, when your at the lake telling somebody about who painted your boat, You may complain about the price, but, you won't be compaining about the work.
and.....most body shops realize this.

Sorry, I drifted off course.
$1500-$2500 for the hull and top cap.
That could be narrowed down if the boat was here so that I could see all of the dents and dings that needed to be worked.

I received a quote of $450 - $500 for labour, and that was just to scuff up the surface. He is getting back to me with a full quote to figure out what it will be with materials included.

Thanks for your help everyone.
