I have decided that I better clean the carbs on my '94 215 horse Johnson. The boat had not been run in two years when I bought it and I ran it with a mixture of old/new gas for about 1 hour. boat supposedly ran allright at mechanics on "shop gas". It runs a little rough now and I don't want to take a chance without cleaning the carburators.

How much should I expect to pay for this job? Any recommendation in Southern California area?

Thanks,

Mirko

215 hp? never heard of it. is this a 225 ?
if it is a standard loop charged 90 degree motor there are 6 carbs. kits are about 18 dollars or so. takes about an hour a carb. that will put you in the ball park. test the compression first. if you have been running it with dirty carbs its possible your rough idle is due to poor compression.
good luck and keep posting

Sorry...

It's a '94 Johnson 115 horse. I read the post and thought I had the year wrong but in fact I'm all messed up. :)

'94 Johnson 115 horse is right, however.

Thanks,

Mirko

hello
kits cost about the same. takes an hour and a half to 2 hours normaly. if it has plastic (minlon) fuel bowls they may be warped. a classic sign of this is the motor wont idle trimmed down but idles better and several hundred rpm faster when trimmed almost out of the water.
good luck and keep posting and if you wish to do it yourself this is a very easy carb to repair.

Its OK Mirko....blame it on the morning after :D

Ask for carb kit pn 439076. Youll need two. Around $18.89 from Johnny/Rude dealer.

Do ya' got a service manual? May as well get one of them two. It'll show you how to pull and service the carbs without any guess work.

Good Luck!.

I've ordered the shop manual. Problem is I don't consider myself machanically inclined at all ;) I am also concerned about getting the carbs all dialed in afterwards. Is there a lot of recalibrating that needs to be done. I can't imagine I would be able to set fuel/air mixture, idle speed etc. I hope to have the manual soon and I'll check it out. Wish I could just have it done for $200 and be done with it. It's the $400-500 stuff I can't handle.

I have sure had a lot of people here tell me to just go for it. You'all almost have me convinced.

Thanks for your reply.

Mirko

Mirko - I did the carbs on my 87 OMC V4 this summer. I too was concerned about getting the carbs dialed in after I was done. I got around that by not disconnecting the linkage between the two carbs. I took both off as a single unit. Whan you get them clean I would suggest that you take them to someplace where they have an air compressor if you do not have one and blow out all the passages that you cannot see.

Just take your time and use the manual (I also find the parts manual helpful as it has great diagrams).

If you don't rebuild, what is "cleaning" all about? Is there a procedure for doing this as opposed to rebuilding? I like the idea of not touching the linkage. I look at that part and cringe.
