i have a j16 skiff, 350# w/15hp 100# on a B&S trailer. the tongue weight is around 250#! is that right, if it is to heavy how do i fix? the transom is even with the bunks, the axel can be only moved up about 4".

brent,

Four inches will make a HUGE difference. Tongue weight should be abot 10% of total.

Always best to have a balanced trailer. If you dont want to move axles.... then make yourself longer bunks and move boat back more distribute weight to rear. Also make sure your fuel/etc is in stern of boat when trailering which will affect tongue weight no matter how much you adjust trailer.

with a 16' carolina and a 15 hp O/B, does it pull "bad" when you trailer? I wouldn't think it would be that bad of a pull with a full size vehicle. How does it handle when you pull it? Or is it just a hassle to have that much weight on the tongue when hooking/unhooking the boat from the car?

Beaux it does not pull bad at all, Toytota Tundra
just at 250# tongue for such a small rig it is hard to move around the yard. its not that i dont want to move the axel it is i can only move it about 4" would that make a change i could tell or is it not worth it?

According to those numbers, you have over half your total weight on the tongue. that means the axle must be clear at the back of the trailer. I don't think 4" is going to gain a whole lot. What prevents you from moving the axle farther than that?

Depending on the length of your trailer and where your boats sits on it, four inches forward could actually make a pretty large difference in tongue weight (especially on a short trailer).

Have you weighed entire trailer/boat package? You don't indicate weight of trailer itself in original and that must be included in calculations. Also, does 350# just the hull or is it "stuff" in boat also (fuel, gear, anchors, etc.). At 120#, 10~15% range for tongue weight would be 800 to 1200 lbs.
