How much water is normal?

I have the smallest Racor water seperator hooked up to my 84 115 VRO and it seeems that in a half a tank of fuel I have to dump it out (full of water) atleast twice! I have never used a water seperator this small on an outboard so I am wondering if I should drain out the gas because there is a ton of water? Also she runs rough at idle, but smooth at top speeds, I did the de-carbing and it improved the top end, but not trolling speeds. I am wondering it if has to do witth the water as well? Thanks for the help with my pressure and temp gauges, it woudl out great and I feel so much better out there now. This place is a real asset and I appreciate any help.
Also does water float on top or does the fuel ?

If you've filled up two water seperators, you need to GET RID OF THAT GAS.

If your tank is built in, check your vent. Does it get spray?

Does your filler cap seal?

If the water separates it will go to the bottom. I believe that most petroleum products are lighter than water.

If you can, get the full sized filter. If you premix your fuel, make sure that the filter is for that purpose.

Alcohol products like dry gas can help to mix some water back into the fuel, but it is limited.

The fuel pickup is on the bottom where it is likely to pick up water when the tank has not been agitated.

The cap seals that the vent is safe from spray. I had the tank out and stored, I am thinking water found it's way in there some how.. The racor I have it rated for the fuel rate so I am sure I am good there. I have always been told that dry gas can strip the cylinders of oil; and cause failure?

It is an aliminum permanant tank I am just going to hook up a pump and get it all out

Link n sinc, is there a web page with the directions? I have a manual I bought from ebay but it turned out to be a burned disc of a manual and is not that legible so if you have a lsite address it would be great, thanks.

Scott, when you say you have the smallest separator, are you talking small in diameter or micron size, because a 10 micron filter/separator is gonna be better than a 25 micron one. If you mean diameter then yeah get the bigger one.

Ezeke, are there really different filters for pre-mixed fuel as opposed to OMS (VRO)? I've never heard of that, I've always just grabbed what's on the shelf.

Cricket Too,

Not on very firm ground but Racor web site says:

"Note: Racor filter/separators will not separate oil from gasoline in blended fuel mixtures."

I took that to indicate that some filters could separate oil from gasoline.

I was also told by our dealer not to use a diesel filter/separator on gasoline or pre-mix (too bad too because I had a box of them from my old VW diesel).

Re: How much water is normal?

sweet thanks ezeke, you would not believe how many people told me to stay away from it, this will make this much easier, I am still going to drain (too bad seeing I have a half tank) but I am going to to throw some dry gas in there along with some carb cleaner just for good measure. I might just rebuild the carbs just for safe measure as well. So far I am very pleased with the motor, on a Grady white 180 sportsman, she will push her to 35 MPH with full gear and three adults with a 13.75 x 17 prop. All I have to do is get her to troll smooth and I am set. Wish me luck.8)
