Thanx to all the help I received here I was able to get outdrive serviced and trim pump leak fixed. Boat is a 1978 SeaStar
Spoiler 888 with 165 Mercruiser serial range 4940400 range. Trim leak was a blown o-ring--really blown, shredded and paper thin. Got her fired up on the muffs this afternoon. Shifted ok, and ran about 15 min at up to 2k rpm with no temp above 150. Embarrassed to say I didn't notice last year on muffs how much water came from prop. Today not much out of gimbal, but lots out of prop and between prop and lower. Is that normal? Outdrive a little warm to touch. Cool day tho.
Last fall pretty hazy. First boat, got out 4 times, then my best friend, my brother lost his battle to cancer. I had the honor of doing his hospice care his last week. Boating pretty unimportant at those times. This year I know he'll be telling us to kick some butt and have fun.

I don’t think that means anything. It wasn’t under load. I generally don’t do much more than idle when I’m on the hose.

This is what I consider normal for my ‘75 165.

This is right after a new impeller + cleaned out the ft. cavity by the shift shaft. The pee hole area.
Water out the prop hub, out the pee hole and out both side of the idle relief.

What do you mean about water coming out between the prop and the lower? Explain this more.

Fwiw, my drive don’t get warm at all while on the hose. Only when it’s under load. This may need further inspection to. I replace the upper brg for the vertical drive shaft in the upper on mine. This made my drive run cooler. Reason I think it runs cooler is that I get less hard water deposits on my drive now that it’s got the new brg. The drive in the pic has run hot. Ya can see the white build up on it. Lime away toliet bowl cleaner washes these hard water deposits right off, but then it comes back after some runs. Less so though now that I replaced that upper brg.

Thnx for info. Think maybe I was feeling area where exhaust travels. Finally got on the water yesterday. Started, idled, shifted, and ran nicely. Only out about 45 minutes. Temp never above 150. Will check crankcase and drive lubes tonight. Lot of water out of bilge, but may have been from forward bilge that didn't seem to be draining well because of some leaves plugging hole. Gotta get trim indicator working. Can't tell if wires are original. Prev owners had new motor and throttle installed a few years ago and unsure of wiring colors, etc--and I'm not very bright. Will try to get that issue resolved, but not gonna pull gimbal, etc. Thnx, Greg

This is interesting. My 87 3.0L Mercruiser with Alpha 1 drive, seems to dump more water from the driver side gimble, and out the pee hole, but not much out of the prop.
