I just bought a boat with a Evinrude 6hp kicker. I startd it up today for the first time in a garbage can and it ran ok but water just dripped out of the pee hole. Is this normal? Also after it ran for a while it wanted to quit. It was hot to the touch so I shut it down to be safe.

Also can I tell the year from the serial #? Thanks guys!

I'd say your water pump needs to be rebuilt. Replace the impeller at the minimum, clear out the pee hole with a thin wire or piece of weed whacker line (insects sometimes nest here), and check/clean all water passages if you are ambitious enough to open the head.

The pee hole should have more of a stream than a drip. And you should be able to touch the head for about a second, maybe two, when the motor is warmed up.

It's very possible the motor wanted to die because it was overheating. Don't run it anymore until you've at least changed the impeller.

If you post the serial number and model number for your motor, someone will be along shortly with the year. Then it would be very helpful for you to pick up the OEM service manual for your motor. It will make routine maintenance much easier. Once you know the year of the motor, there are guys who can tell you the best place to get the OEM service manual.

Good Luck,
Kev
