how much fiberglass cloth and resin do i need, iv already biult my transom and installed using resin from the autoparts store and my own saw dust, but i still need to tab in the new transom and glass over the new floor. its a long shaft transom that is 6 foot wide, its an 15 ft runabout, the floor is about 10 foot long by about 3.5 feet wide at its widest point, oh and i need to glass in the new stringers. the longest of witch is 12 foot long. i want to try to spend less than $150 on the needed glassing supply's if i can. also i noticed i must have been off a little on my templet for my transom and have a few gaps around 1/4 inch the longest of witch is about 6 inches long is it ok to fill this gap with peanut butter?

Re: how much.......

well browsing around the internet, i found Jamestown's distributer's web sight, in my shopping cart iv got

FIB-954 FIBERGLASS CLOTH 4 OZ, 50" X 10 YD PRE-CUT PACKAGE

FIB-928 FIBERGLASS TAPE 8.7 OZ 4" X 25 YD PRE-CUT PKG

1 gallon BYRG BONDO BOATYARD RESIN GAL 2 Hardeners 4/CS ***POLYESTER RESIN KIT UN3269*** ***CAN ONLY SHIP 2 IN A BOX***

total plus shipping is $157.80

i plan on using the tape to run around all the edges where the floor meets the hull and the same for the transom and then using 2 layers of cloth, i dont realy want to spend much more than that if i don't have too, but according to my calculations its going to be close, ill have enough to run strips over the stringers to the hull like it was orrigionaly constructed, but not enough to fully glass in the stringers. one thing another thing im worried about is that might not be enough resin, i dont remember how much i used to make the peanut butter for the transom but it seemed like quite a bit. and im going to have to coat the floor with a layer of resin before i lay it up for good adheasion. if anyone has any input it would be appricated, or if you know of a cheaper place to order from that is cheaper so i could get more for my money. another option i would have is to fully glass the stringers and use the tape + 1 layer on the floor.

Re: how much.......

Forget the cloth, it's of no value in this job, you need mat and roving, plus at least a couple gallons of resin.

Looks better. I didn't do the math, but to figure the amount of resin needed, figure the square feet of glass and the weight for it. You will need about twice that weight in resin. This is for a finished laminate, not including waste or mistakes.

Re: how much.......

Here's the math to estimate resin amount:

2 oz of resin per oz of cloth for mat.
1 oz of resin per oz of cloth for woven roven.

Mat is sold in oz per sq FOOT...
1.5 oz mat uses 3 oz of resin per sq ft or 27 oz per sq yd.

Woven roven is sold in oz per sq YARD...
24 oz woven roven uses 24 oz resin per sq yd or 2.66 oz per sq ft.

Re: how much.......

well i think at 20 yards of material im going to come up just short on enough material, so im probably just going to wait till next pay day to order and get 30 yards, because chances are im going to cut something wrong or my calculations are off a little. like i did with my pt wood, i thought i was going to get another peice out of a sheet when i bought my lumber if i positioned it just right well after i got my card board temples made i realized i was a few inches off and it wouldn't work. also how meany oz are in a gallon? sorry math was never my strongest subject...lol.

another question is what the min amount of dry time on a sheet of 1/2 inch pt ply. the last ones i bought sat for about 6 months because i got busy with other things. i bought this last sheet im going to need earlier this week. i have it sitting up on a set of saw horses so its got air on all sides. and what kind of screws can be used in pt?

make sure the pt is supported well or it will warp......id also use a fan on it...it will dry quicker.....minimum in hot weather.....2.5 weeks with a fan.

use special screws with pt....(green) they are avalable at your local hardware store

Re: how much.......

warping is fine i acualy want it to warp, im replacing a curved transom so it makes things a little easier if its warped... seems how its the last layer i was planning on spreading my peanut butter and then screwing it to the other layers but i think im just going to use my elaborate clamping system and say no to screws.

Re: how much.......

You can scribe one side of the ply to make it bend easier. Set a skill saw blade 1/8" deep or so and run surface cuts so the ply will bend the way you want. It won't lose enough strength to make a difference.
