Can older pump cause major damage to the 2 stroke outboard? How many years should one wait before replacing or rebuilding the fuel pump as a preventing measure?

can a bad fuel pump damage a 2 stroke? most certainly.
lack of sufficeint fuel in a carb or VST can lead to lean running which can lead to burned pistons. all due to a weak or stretched rubber diaphram.
on certain engines a ruptured diaphram will spray raw gasoline into the crankcase, washing off the oil and causing rods to be tossed outside the block.
I reccomend every 3 years for a standard pump and for the VRO or OMS replace the pump every 6 years or so.
