Did a detailed inspection of my motor last weekend and noticed that the 4-bolt plate that covers this area is starting to rust pretty bad around the edges. Something I'd be concerned about if it held in some kind of fluid... but probably wouldn't worry about too much if it was just a dust cover. Any insight as to what specifically this cover does would be helpful. Also where online I could find a replacement should I need to. Thanks.

A picture of a similar motor with the actual plate removed. Area circled in red.

It's got to be sealed up. Engine oil is always present behind it. I always heard it called the push rod cover....or side cover...or lifter cover.

Chances are you will soon see oil leakage behind the crankshaft pulley as well. You'll need a pushrod cover and gasket as well as a timing cover and gasket for repairs.
