Make sure you get the right one for your plugs. You'll have to drill out the old hole to
the correct size for the helicoil tap. Be sure you drill directly on the true axis of the
old threads- this can be a little tricky since they are normally at some odd angle. The
tap can tolerate a little out of position on the drilled hole, but make it as correct as
possible. If you're not used to using tools/working on motors, probably better to have
a local mechanic do the work.

I don't think so, that is just for cleaning one up but just how bad yours is is your call. Usually you need to Helicoil them which is drilling out the old hole oversize, tapping & then inserting a special square wire the right size to provide new threads.

I found that a local mechanic did the job for about as much as one would pay to buy the tools/inserts. If you foresee that you may do quite a few of these, then a Helicoil (or similar) kit would be a good investment. Otherwise, the local mechanic may be best.

How hard would it be to pull the head cover to do this? I'm really handy with tools, but I don't want to screw anything up, so I'm kind of torn.

Pulling the head is very simple on the 9.5 I think its 8 bolts? you will need a new head gasket, Helicoils work fine, you could most likely find a used head on ebay or one of the salvage yards listed here on iboats under the top secret file. good luck

Ebay has quite a few complete heads and fairly reasonable on price too.

If I was in your position....... I would order a head gasket (remember you will need access to a torque wrench to re-install) and remove the current head. I would go to a local machine shop and have the heli-coil installed for me........ if that does not work out then order a head.

Cheap method first!

Helicoils work when properly installed. I prefer Time-Serts because the similarities of material (Time-Sert and head) give near stock heat transfer.

I have a torque wrench as well as two complete sets of sockets. How much $ am I looking at to get the helicoil or timesert installed at a machine shop? Would they buy the insert and then just bill me for it, or would I buy it and bring it to them? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks.

I always call my favorite outboard salvage yard (tim's) here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=438822

I'm sure I could futz around w/helicoil.. but easier (and cheaper) to just order a used head and a new gasket and slap it on. Have your motor's model number ready when you call 218-682-2331.

Good luck!

I think what I'm going to do is try that cheap kit with the back up of ordering a used head. The kit that I saw was only like $11, so theres not much to loose. If I order a new head, this one will be useless anyway, right? Thanks!

Re: How Serious Is This?

Alright guys, I bit the bullet and bought a new head gasket and a helicoil set, if that fails, then I will get a new head. The head came of easily (to my surprise!). The pistons are covered in black carbon, so I am going to decarb it with sea foam if I ever get it running! haha Does this sound like a good plan? Thanks

Re: How Serious Is This?

Alright guys, the helicoil worked like a charm. All I needed was the kit, some grease, some high temp rtv sealant, and a 3/8 inch ratchet! The tap worked wonderfully, and everything was a breeze. I put some high temp RTV sealant on it about 12 hours ago, and it is holding in good so far. I will hopefully receive my new head gasket today, so I can reinstall the head. I will compression test when it is done setting and report back to y'all.

Where did you use the RTV and grease?

Re: How Serious Is This?

I used the grease to lubricate the tap as it went in, and I used the rtv on the outside of the insert threads to lock the helicoil in place. It holds the compression excellently on that hole now.
