Reading a Trailers & Towing forum thread about lost wheels reminded me of this.

I keep my boat in a storage yard couple miles away, had it at home last weekend doing some maintenance-type stuff, including changing out a leaky rear seal on the trailer hub.

Standard operating procedure of course is to put it back on the ground before tightening down the lug nuts, but believe it or not I just now remembered I didn't do that. They're just barely tight.

Now, I know I didn't do any harm on the trip back to the yard, but I somehow have to remember to crank 'em down before I take it out again. Might not be for a couple weeks.

That's not part of the routine, how the heck am I supposed to remember?

Drive out there tonight and tighten them down, if it's only a couple miles away..........

tape a yellow sticky note to the center of your steering wheel....or go over there tonight and tighten them up while you remember it. If it's only a couple of miles away, spend 30 minutes and do it now. you don't want to remember when you see the wheel go flying off! no bueno!

Done. Couple of 'em got pretty loose, just on the few blocks to the yard. If you do somethin stupid but luck out before it bites ya in the axx, is it still a Stupid Human Trick?

I did brakes on one of my cars with a friend. He took the driver side, me the passenger side. About a week later, I was washing it and noticed one lug nut on his side was gone, the other 4 were finger tight . . . I had already put about 500 miles on it as I was commuting to San Diego. Sometimes luck is OK ;)

QC You were lucky.THE GIRLS used my trailer once
and i had changed the wheels from one thing to another, like over 6 weeks. I get this phone call and they are 150 miles away and done a tranny.
When i get there and to give em a new tow rig i look at the trailer nuts, only got 3 on each wheel and 2 of them are loose nearly s--t myself.
So while they are talking like chooks i sneak around and take the extras from my rig and replace the missing nuts. The most important thing i learnt from this dont stop the chooks from talking :D

Well I had the tire repiared on my VW and when I put it on I tightened the nuts BUT not on the ground Like I know better to do.
Pickup my girl friend and the bugs kinda wondering like the winds blowing. The wind was not blowing. Lost the tire and spin a 180 in the road.

That was fun but seriously dangerous.
Took a bolt from the other three wheels and put the spare on. Yes I tightened it! Found the tire 1/2 mile farther and on the other side of the street the next day!

Re: How the heck am I supposed to remember this?

While driving down a small back road out west one time I was meeting a 18 wheeler when about 100 yds away one of his tires came off and is bouncing down the road right towards me. Must have been the clean living because just as I was sure it was going to land on my pickup it must have hit a spot in the road and went off into the ditch. I needed an entire clean wardrobe after that! The trucker never stopped for the tire either!

Had that happen here a couple of days ago - the truck wheel hit a pedestrian waiting to cross the road.

Pedestrian ended up with a broken leg!

Put a note on the hitch. While you go over to do that, tighten 'em up and forget the note.
