So, I went to put my recently acquired '72 Larson 186 BR in the water for the first time yesterday. When I had bought it, I obviously checked the hull....guess I didn't check well enough, because not five minutes after she was in the water, so were we, at least at our feet. So, Turns out there was a 2.5 foot long crack in a crappy patch job that we couldnt see because of the trailer. Anyway, I'm now going to reglass on the inside of the hull because it appears to be less that 1/4" thick. What is a proper thickness? At this point I want to make the whole thing like half inch thick to be safe.

Your thoughts...

3/8ths would be thick enough if you want beefy. I don't think my Glastron is much over 1\4th inch, just thicker at the keel.

Aww! no boy, glass the out side . Inside will not bond if the coating is damp
and you still have a bad spot in the hull. sand the outside , and feather the out side edges of your repair to make your patch blend with origional finish. Do it right the first time and forget it. Don't make another crappy patch job. Have fun!

Re: How thick?

Sorry Lone Duck but you will not get any strength from an exterior repair job.
The interior patch is absolutely necessary to make it strong - it doesn't have to be pretty. If you try to build up any patch from the exterior it will end up being very thin - if you want it smooth.
As far as wet is concerned, well - you need to dry it out. Circulating air is the best choice - . Put a fan in there and forget about it for awhile. You're gonna' need to prep the existing glass for it to accept the new material, so either way it will need to be dried out.
