How tight should the clutch pack rod be?

Hi everyone, as I’m putting my clutch pack together, there is a rod that goes through the clutch pack shaft(the shaft that holds the clutches and discs) and puts pressure on the clutch pack from the starboard side and pushes the clutches against a washer and a c clip on the port side.

The clutch pack shaft has a bolt that passes through it and you tighten the bolt to put pressure on the rod that goes across the shaft.

How tight should that bolt be pushing against the rod to push the clutches together?

I’ve narrowed it down to a few settings, which should it be?

1.) Snug enough where the clutches don’t slip, but I can still tilt the drive with almost no force by hand.

2.) Tight enough to the point where It takes a great amount of force to tilt the drive by hand.

3) Tight enough where I can’t move the drive at all by hand.

4.) Tighten the bolt so it pushes the clutches as tight as possible.

Here are are some pictures.

One picture show the clutch pack assembly sitting in oil with the rod ground across the shaft.
One picture shows the Allen key head bolt which tightens the rod.
One picture Won’t upload but it just shows the bolt threading into the shaft and making contact on the rod. I’ll resize it and upload it if you guys need to see it.

thanks in advance.

Sorry, I have never been that deep into my Tilt .

But I would expect that is has to be your option 3 or 4 , I know I cant tilt mine by hand. If you can move it by hand then your prop will be jumping out of the water when you are in reverse .

Good luck

I know the stringer clutch pack is compressed with a clamping tool i believe the factory manual has the information.

Not sure if sterndrive has vids http://www.sterndrive.info/

Thanks for the replies.

If I go with option 3 or 4, there is an in between point and I’m not sure where to set it.
I can tighten it to option 3 where I can’t move the drive at all by hand, but there is still more room to tighten the bolt even tighter(option 4)

Thanks for the link Scott, but I didn’t find any videos and I don’t have an owners manual.
