I am in the middle of rebuilding this engine. When disassembling i could see flywheel magnetos had touched ignition stator coil, causing heat. I now replaced coil. Does anyone know a smart trick to place the coil with the right tolerance to magnets. I do not have an ignition ring, as used by pro's. I can easily get the coils away from magnets, but suppose charging will be weak if distance is to big.

Howdy, G Dane.

My book on older OMCs describes the reinstallation of the coils thus: "...note machined bosses on armature plate casting - adjust position of the coil to where face of the coil rests flush with the face of the machined boss; . . ." - - "This operation provides correct clearance between coil heels and pole shoes of the magnets cast into the flywheel."

This book only goes up to 1969, but I hope this helps.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

They eventually developed a special tool, basically a ring that fits over the bosses and allows the perfect alignment of the coils so the don't get whacked by the flywheel. If you're careful, J.B.'s method does work.

-John

Hello Gdane
I think you can make an easy tool by yourselfe.
Take a flat bar, drill a hole so it fit the crank axel. In the opposit end you can make or instal an angle, maybe making it adjustable.
I have made a simpel drawing, but don't know how to put it in the reply.
maybe I can e-mail it to you.

Mikael

:) :)
