Is there a way to adjust the oil/gas mixture on a mid 70s model v4 85hp outboard? My engine stalls at low rpms and you can see and smell the gas mixture coming out of the exhaust at the propeller. That mixture looks milky with the water coming out of the exhaust port. I thought i blew a lower unit seal but after double checking the lower unit the oil is red with no water mixed with it. My gas mileage is poor. I dont kow how to adjust the mixture on the carbs. Can anyone help me with this?

Mid 70's as in 76 or so? First of all the oil/gas mixture is mixed in the tank. Do you mean fuel/air mix?

I think you'll find you don't have adjustable jets, but we need a year to be sure. (Maybe not, did the early 70's V4s have adjustable low-speed jets?) You might want to open up the airbox and make sure your choke isn't sticking shut. Other than that, you may be due for a carb rebuild.

Yeah I am talking about the air fuel mixture. Im sorry for the mistake. I dont have a serial number on the motor so i am not sure what year it is. On the air box cover plate there are engravings that say "slow speed mixture adjust" There are 4 flathead screws behind the plate that the engravings refer to. What is the best way to determine how far to turn these screws. The choke is not sticking shut. I have checked for that.

Quote: "There are 4 flathead screws behind the plate that the engravings refer to". Those are not adjusting screws, they are plugs for the holes where adjusting screws were on older models. They should be screwed/seated all the way in. Your motor has fixed idle and fixed high speed jets. There is nothing to adjust other than throttle linkage. Be glad, because the adjustable jets are a pain.

Now, if you do have an older motor, the adjustable idle mixture jets referred to are brass shafts sticking out of those indicated holes, with (hopefully) linkages connecting them all together. That isn't what you have, is it?
