Check the yellow pages in your area for a Power Squadron or Coast Guard Safe Boating course. You'll get all the literature and instruction on the rules. Once you know the basics, be sure you study the structure of the lake or river you intend to navigate before you head out on it the first time. Rocks, stumps, and other submerged objects are not always marked. They can do bad things to your boat, engine, and the boats occupants.

The smaller AZ lakes like Patagonia are pretty darn lax. As long as you have your PFDs, obey the no-wake zone (extends for half the lake at Patagonia), and don't scare anybody you should be Ok. Very, very different from operating a boat on a busy commercial water way. Which is where all the sea lawyers come in ;)

Kelly Cook
(Tucson survivor)

Hello BKSinAZ, I am here in AZ too. Let's see some pictures of your boat!

When you get ready to head out... don't be in a rush, the first time is very important as well.... it's your first time.

Where will you be heading to wet the boat?

Come up North sometime. There are a lot of good lakes surrounding the Phoenix area.

Phoenix is considered Northern Arizona?

My favorites are Pleasant and Saguaro.

No. Phoenix is in central AZ, but your compass will say you are traveling Northwest, but mostly North while driving from Tucson to Phoenix.

Pleasant is also my favorite. :D
