How To Build Stringers???

I have my 1972 Sea Ray 190SRV O/B gutted. The stringers were pure rot. My question is how to make a template for cutting the new stringers to the curve of the hull. I have seen the post for the hull extention and I see how he did it... but, I don't have the cap removed off the boat and wouldn't be able to build the 'jig' to hold the board level with the hull bottom. Also, should the boat be removed from the trailer while doing this step? I saw on another forum that it should and that the hull could flex during this proccess. What are your ideas?

The only Idea I had regarding a template was to put a string from stern to bow and measure every 1 inch and plot that on the replacement... Is there an easier way?

Re: How To Build Stringers???

I took a piece of scrap wood and drilled a hole approximately 1/2" up from the tip just big enough to fit a pencil so I can scribe the bottom of the stringer so I can replicate the contour of the hull to the stringer. Then I cut to size and refitted which is pretty good. Sand the bottom of the stringer so it fits better then cut the top of the stringer down to size.

Homemade scribing tool...had to break the pencil in half so I could scribe the bow area since the pencil was too long to fit inside the v of the hull and used a screw to hold pencil in place.

Go to the oops hull extension thread and check out the post and scribe method.
