Can I find maintenance instructions on the Internet without having to buy a manual?

make sure you put it in forward gear before you drop the lower unit. Makes it easier when you put it back together.

Check in the Library for a manual before you buy one. I went yesterday and found a manual that I could just copy the pages I needed instead of spending 30 bucks. I paid a little over 300 for my motor, wasn't to keen on a paying a tenth of that just for a manual.

phatmanmike, thaks for the advise. Manual, water pump impeller and fuel pump kit have been ordered.
this 9.8, at last accounts was runing OK until the fule pump cracked. It has been in a garage for several years and was given to me. I will use this is a extra motor when going down stream. It won't hurt to put a little money in it for safety.

In my experience, a manual often pays for itself very quickly...

"Hmmm. How come this doodad over here won't come off? Arrrgh!! – CRACK!! – Oops. Oh. There's a bolt there. Now how was I supposed to know that bolt was there? "

Time passes....

"What do you mean a new casing is No Longer Available? I've already spent $600 on this thing and now I can't finish it because that casing isn't available?... Well, yeah, it was fine before I tapped it with a hammer trying to loosen it.... Well, okay, so the manual clearly illustrates the proper way to remove it? Oh, okay. I see. And removing that one bolt would have saved me from cracking the housing in the first place. Dang. Okay, so you're telling me I have $600 invested in a motor I can't use because I couldn't cough up $30 for a manual. Yeah, I guess I deserve that..."

Been there, done that and have the scars to prove it!!

- Scott
