I just got an older Outboard Motor I think it is a Ted Williams 7.5 hp
The Model # is 217-58587-0
I would like to change the oil in the lower unit. I see a fill hole on one side and a vent hole on the other. When I take the vent screw out no oil drains.
Do I need to take off the 4 screws out of the very bottom part. If I fill do I do it from the fill hole untill the oil comes out the vent or fill to the top.

Re: How To Change Oil in Lower Unit

Bill,
Take BOTH screws out and let her drain real good....I let it go until there's no more drips. Watch for milky colored oil....that's a sign that you have a seal leak or a bad o-ring on one of your screw/plugs and water's getting in there ....fix or replace it and get on with your life.
Some of the good drain plugs have a magnet on the end of them to collect any metal wear products(hopefully you won't see a big pile of metal on it...if you do, clean it off and get on with your life).
Most lower unit oil is available in a squeeze type plastic tube with a nozzle similar to a caulk tube...cut the nozzle, hold it into the lower "fill" hole and squeeze/squirt until it comes out the upper vent hole....then install the upper vent hole plug....then you should be able to reinstall the lower plug without loosing any significant amount of oil.
If it's been "forever" since the lower unit oil has been replaced, I flush it by doing a half fill and drain before refilling.
