how to change water pump on 97 Johnson 25 hp

Hello everyone!
I have removed the 6 bolts holding the lower unit but something is holding the shift cable and I am unable to completely drop it.
What next?

Did you remove the water intake screen and disconnect the shift linkage?

Should be a brass looking with a 1/4" X 20 thread bolt. Remove that and it should come off. Thats if memory serves me?

ok impeller still looks good so I;ll change it in the fall.
I'm just having a hard time with reconnecting the brass fitting for the shift rod.
SO of course it's misaligned now and I'm not sure what direction to go.
Can someone educate me on the correct position or put it into perspective so that I can understand what I am trying to accomplish here?

Take a look at the site below, #49 and 26 should be what you are working on. They should just screw togeather.

Its not so easy as just screwing it together because it's also an adjustment.

I will have to try and scare up a manual, if I remember I just screwed them togeather on the ones I have done.

Well I tired to screw it together and neutral is not lining up anymore.
It's hitting a gear.
If I unscrew it, about 10 turns leaving it connected then all gear positions are fine, but as soon as I tighten it up neutral is no longer neutral anymore.
