im looking at older (1980-1992) bowriders with i/o motors. i am mechanically inclined and im comfortable checking motors, but i know nothing about boat outdrives. i dont want to get a $4,000 boat that needs a rebuilt $3,000 outdrive. any buying that keeps me out of trouble is greatly appreciated. thanks, dave

No expert here, but my friends have an older Mercruiser and when they pulled it out for seasonal care I took a good look and did the following.

Replaced all Zincs, Changed the lower unit oil, (YOU can pull the plug on the geargase and look for signs of water) The oil should be a good color and not milky looking. That may indicate water in the gearcase.

Also, inspect any seals like on the trim system. Make sure no there are no fluid leaks.

Also, make sure there is no corrosion.

What I have heard on I/O is a lot of talk about the cooling system.

Thats all I know on this, but hope it helps.

Forgot to mention the obvious. Check the prop and hub. Make sure is spins freely. Pull the prop and make sure the driveshaft isn't bent and very well lubed. Check the seals here also.
