How to check out drive oil level?

This may sound crazy, but how do I check oil level alpha 1 gen 2 lower unit? The unit I does not have reservoir inside the boat. However, it does have a "dipstick" on top of the drive unit. Upon unscrewing the screw, dipstick is attached to the screw. There is a line on the dipstick, but I'm not sure if that's the min or the max oil level. Also, should the oil level be checked with the dipstick screw tighten?

Thanks

Manual 14 states
1. Check oil level - oil should come up to line on dipstick. (Drive down ventilation plate level) If oil is at proper level, reinstall oil dipstick and sealing washer. If oil is low, proceed to Step 2

Step 2, reinstall dip stick, then add oil from the bottom until it comes out the vent hole

So the line is the level at which it should be

I read that as well. But, two questions

First, should the dipstick be tighten or simply rest on top of the hole?
Second, I'm used to engine oil dip stick where there is a range. Is the line on the Mercruiser dipstick the min or the max?

On the alpha drives that used to use a dipstick, the dipstick should be hand tightened and should be with no washer (< check both ways) in order to get an accurate oil level reading. The dipstick line is supposed to be the oil level of the vent hole...There's not really an oil range with this model. Drive position is critical.

The most important thing to do is to have an air free oil flow coming out of the vent hole.

in other words, sort of ignore the dipstick, make sure the drive is level and pull the vent plug. you should have oil seep out of the hole. if you dont, you need more oil. I am guessing this is a new to you boat? if so, when was the last time the gear oil was changed?

Thanks. This is indeed a my first Mercruiser outdrive without gear oil reservoir mounted inside the boat.

Not a Gen II expert, but from what I can find on line, it appears the bottle can be added.
