My dad bought an old 14 foot aluminum fishing boat the other day and we need a new trolling motor for it. What should we get?

That question is sort of like asking "how high is up!" What you need depends on how you fish, where you fish and how long you fish. If the motor is the only means of propulsion thats one issue as you will need maximum run time and digitial motors are battery savers compared to non-digital and it also means the largest deep cycle battery you can afford or have room for. If you fish in very windy conditions a bow mount is a far better but more expensive way to go. My suggestion for the less than die hard, relatively calm water and frugal fisherperson would be a Stern mount with about 36# thrust. Easy on/easy off for protection from theft and easy on the wallet.

Re: How to choose a trolling motor?

I make 5 casts & move. So atrolling motor would berunning most of the time. I simply bought a Evinrude electric start With pull start also 9.9 hp. Lets me fish all the 10 hp limit waters. Fish move when I start the motor. So what. I am already leaving the area.

If you can cast more than 100'. You are good to go on gas. The 9.9 is a 2 finger 12" pull. I use it for some excercise.. Bigger fish love a boat noise. spooks out the little guys. YUM YUM. :)

I do almost a week on 6 gallons. Retired & fish almost every day. Electric is too slow to change locations. Buy a 9.9 It is great on my 16' Lowe Aluminum. 1 or 2 adults 200 pounds + - is fine.

Really want to sneak in ? Use the wind or row in. I do all 3 forms of power.
