how to clean my points and set them

hello i have a tas outboard model tob -12
i want to clean the points having issues with spark
the manual says to set the gap at 0.35 when i try to set gap i can't get the gap to open any more even when i unloosen adjusting screws you guys are the best

That sounds too wide, like a spark plug gap??? Point gap is usually about .016"-.020" Reheck your manual for point gap.

Drag a strip of fine Emory cloth between the points while they are closed under tension....spray/clean with carb cleaner/acetone/alcohol/etc., then set then at the cam open position....should be something in the .015 inch range, give or take a couple....check your book for setting.

it says no wider than 0.35 having trouble downloading pics this motor is making me cry

I've never heard of points being set wider then .022"? I would think that the coil, or power source would not be able to jump a gap of .035", besides the fact that your setup is not letting you go that wide of a gap,,, Doesn't that tell you something? If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't! Do you have spark plugs? Like I said, that sounds like a setting for the spark plug gap!

buy new points.. they are a few bucks....... .035 is spark plug gap

You can use an emery board (like for fingernails) to dress them up, then some alcohol on a Q-tip to clean them.
