How to clean the motor?

Good Morning Everyone;

I hope this is the appropriate place for this question -

I just bought Boat, Motor & Trailer. Motor is 60 HP Evinrude. I want to clean up the motor - the part you see when you take the cover off. There is a noticable film of oil/dirt all over. At the bottom of the enclosure there is some standing oil. The motor runs fine, but if the manufacturer wanted a dirty motor he would send it out that way.

I am worried that the cleaning chemicals might be worse than the oil film. I have thought about using Dawn and then the garden hose. Or maybe a tooth brush and small wipes.

Anyway what should I do?

\New engine cleaners arent gonna hurt your engine. Blot up as much standing oil as possible. Spray gunk engine brite [or whatever is on sale ] On a warm-not hot engine. I have a little collection of small scrub brushes that I hit it with next. Then if you can acess it... run a garden hose to the drain valve of your hot water heater.. Hot water works WAY better then cold.

Super Purple cleaner works pretty well too.
I do mine about once a year,rinse well then dry off with the air hose.

I prefer not to "strip" the dirt and grime off with strong detergents like Purple Power or White Lightning. I use a can of WD-40 and a toothbrush, take my time to loosen all the crud, then just lightly hose it off with a garden hose(without a nozzle), let it air dry in the sun, or blow it off with an air hose. When you get done there'll be a very thin layer of oil on everything, which I believe is good and protects some parts. Once you get it really clean, then it'll stay clean with just a little effort. Good Luck!
