How to determine axle capacity?

I have an old boat trailer that I have inherited. I would like to convert it to a utility trailer.

I do not know the manufacturer, and there is no certification/capacity label attached.

Is there any way to determine the weight capacity of the axle?

Can the hub, spindle, or axle diameter be measured and used to determine the capacity?

Thanks for your help.

Re: How to determine axle capacity?

axle alone wont determine the trailers capacity, there are a lot of factors that can play into it, the tongue capacity, type and size of material used to fabricate, span from tongue to axle, etc. Determining the actual capacity of the axle alone, I honestly could not tell you, but bear in mind these other factors when you go to load it up!

A good place to start would be to see what the max load/tire is. It's on the side of every tire.
