How to Determine Model Number Please Help.

I bought an older (?) Johnson 9.5 HP. The ID tag has been removed from the chassis. Is there any way to find out what the Model Number is for this motor? Is the ID tag the only indicator?

Please help me identifying this motor because I want to start working on it.

Hi sahsko1. Look on the engine block. There should be a welch plug with an ID number stamped into it.

Great, I will take a look. But wouldn't it be a serial # though? Can a year of a motor be determined from a serial #?

Ok.. Here's the Number off the welch plug. Does anybody know how to de-cypher it?
