Wondering how to figure out what starter to buy to replace the starter from 1987 260 HP Mercrusier I/O. If engine rotation is specifed as CCW does that mean the starter must be Clockwise or Counter Clockwise? Also can't seem to figure out what engine I have. Can not tell if 5.0 or 5.7L. Is there a Web site where you can enter your Engine Serial Number and get info about that engine? Sticker on engine just says 260 HP 350MCM. But parts stores list just 260, or 5.0 and 5.7. Please Help

Thanks

First off you have a 5.7L
Next it depends on which way the starter mounts as to what you have (are the bolt patterns staggered or straight). Look at this because it works most times. Starter Parts

You have your serial number for your engine? Look on the valve cover. I can tell you just what you need from that.

Re: How to Determine What Starter to Buy

look for a number stamped in the housing, most parts stores can use this number to determine the correct starter, you might want to try a high torque model it made a great difference in my gmc 350 cu.in.
