How to determine year/serial #s for Johnson/Evinrude boat motors

Is there a way to find out the year and serial number for Evinrude/Johnson boat motors??<br />Have older boat motors and can't locate year and serial number for these.

The "Old Outboard Book" by Hunn has an extensive list of serial numbers for J&E motors. It's the best reference I've seen published. You may want to check it out.

Year can be determined from model numbers, LJW. Model numbers of some are stamped on a quarter-size plug on the block. <br /><br />Model numbers of some Johnnys can be found by comparing the engine to pictures in early Johnson Factory Service Manuals.<br /><br />There is no way I know to determine serial numbers if they are not stamped on the motor or label plate.<br /><br />Good luck.
