I am trying to drop my bottom end on my 135ESL74B to change the pump impeller. After removing the bolts it still is hung up onsmething. I did a little research and one fellow has a good thread that explains that it is the shift linkage and gives a lessin on hoe to disconnect it.

The problem is mine looks nothing like his. Can anyone give me advice on how to drop this bottom end safely??

I think your motor is the same as mine. I have a 1974 Johnson 115HP. I posted pics of mine and one from the manual. The pics aren't the greatest but I hope they help.
Here are the instructions from the manual:

"Disconnect shift rod connector from bellcrank by loosening bellcrank screw. Spread bellcrank halves apart and disconnect shift rod connector from bellcrank."

You are looking at the starboard side of the motor under the bottom carb in my pics in case it isn't clear.

EDIT: If you have all the srews holding the gearcase on out already, put at least 1 back in so gearcase doesn't drop.

Thank you for your reply.

I had already found that out and dropped the bottom end. Its back together and purring.

Thank you for taking the time to share your info, it is graetly appreciated. How long have you had your 115 (how many hours do you have on her) and how is she treating you?

What part of the world are you answering me from.

I bought my motor last Feb. I am getting ready to replace my impeller when the new one arrives. I posted about my motor in your "Johnson Boys Need Your Help" thread and in another thread of my own. Read them if you are interested. You can find my posts by clicking on my name in this post and then clicking on "find all posts". Would like to hear how your impeller job went. Did you need any special tools or have any problems I might avoid?:D:D

Well when I say this keep in mind I have changed impellers before (all on mercruiser Iin/out) so wasn't a newbie. The linkage thing was diffent because on a outdrive leg the likage seperates down in the bottom end by the pump...so the long linkage rod was a stumper at first.

As far as problems or special tools...no. I was supprised that most of the bolts were metric (I thought Johnson was made in the USA)
you will need (if it is the same as mine) 14mm wrench for the 4 bolts in the cav plate,11mm socket for the fin bolt, 12mm socket with extention for the bolt under the fin. 10 mm wrench for the 4 pump bolts.

As well you will need a 5/8 and 10 mm for the two bolts you showed in your pics to realese the linkage.

Mine is running on the muffs right now and pumping water like a bandit.

Any problems with your repair PM me

PS I am in winnipeg manitoba Canada...were are you???

That's strange about you using the metric size tools. In my manual it tells the size wrenchs/sockets you need. They are all SAE sizes(1/2...5/8...9/16...etc). I can't remember many manuals telling you the specific wrench size you need for each nut/bolt but this one does.
I do have metric tools if I need them though.
