On the midsection about 5 inches or so above the gearcase/midsection separation line, there is an small cover with 2 screws, the connector is behind it.

well that did the trick but i still cannot get water to shoot out of the motor. i think it mat be gummed up in the water lines. do you know of a way to clean it out?or how to clean the filter on the bottom.

Rubber in the lower unit? Shoot water? Are you trying to say the old impeller was broken into pieces? Is the rubber grommet on the water pump outlet intact? How deep in the water are you lowering the motor to test? The stuck in forward... did you take the gearcase apart?

did not take the gear case apart. rubber may just be dirt from crappy water at lake. im thinking i must have moved the shift rod when installing. impeller was intact and water pump grommet was intact and had a tight seal when i put it back on. but still wont get water out

when you are testing, did you submerge the water pump at least 4 inches?

When you disconnected the shift linkage, did you remove the bolt completely from the coupler? It needs to be out so during installation you can see when you inserted the rod far enough

I'm thinking you didn't get the shift link installed correctly, or you are not manually rotating the prop a little when shifting to get the gears to mesh. I also don't think the '70 has a tell tale -- if so, some water out of the exhaust port is what to expect. But if you aren't getting water up there, pull the l.u. again and try flushing up the water tube (engine off). Rig something to fit over the tube. If you have pieces from an old impeller lodged up there somewhere, or some kind of other debris, you may need to take off the head and exhaust covers to clear passages. Try flushing first.

yup. Rummage around for something to fit -- maybe part of one of those hose quick disconnect units -- something to step down the diameter. Don't blast the water up there, maybe half pressure or so.
