How to disconnect shift rod on 1986 Mariner 25hp two-stroke

Hi all,

Trying to figure out how to disconnect the shift rod where it is attached to the shift lever. Want to remove lower unit to figure out why I'm not getting telltale water.

Can't find anything at all that shows this particular connection, even in my Seloc manual.

See the photo: (note: I took off a small nut that held a metal piece over this mechanism that acted to secure it all to the shift lever)

I THINK the pin connecting the shift rod is inserted through the rod, not just resting in a slot in the rod, but I can't see that that's the case.

Anybody done this before? Thanks --

Is there a visible joint rod connector located at lower middle leg ? if so, remove pin or whatever it's holding it right there and procede to pull lower leg down. Must also remove all the side bolts that hold the lower leg to the middle leg. Hope the drive shaft is not seized already onto the lower side of the crakshaft or will have a hard time pulling the lower leg down..

That shift rod needs to be disconnected from behind the carb. Knock out the broken pin and get the replacement part. When the lower unit drops make sure you find the washer. Have you looked at the thermostat (if.you have one) as that directly controls the pee hole.

Hi Sea Rider, appreciate the input. This shift rod is one single piece.

Flyingscott, I managed to get the pin out by pushing it from the other side under the lower cowling (could just barely see it) with a long screwdriver. Ordered the replacement part. Didn't realize the part I had removed normally would have the pin connected to it, and that would disconnect the shift rod. Seeing just the pin there threw me....

My motor doesn't have a thermostat, so it should always have some water running. I thought maybe I'd gotten some mud in the water pathway -- got a bit too shallow on a recent trip -- but when I pulled off the lower unit and opened up the impeller housing, the impeller was in pieces, and one of the pieces got lodged in the channel where the impeller pushes the water into the cooling path, hence the lack of water.
