How to disengage gearshift on a Bayliner 1750 Capri

I'm in doubt about how I am supposed to rev the engine without engaging the gearshift on my Bayliner 1750 Capri with OMC 2.3L engine from 1988. The throttle handle, which is a US Marine, has an nonworking button underneath the horisontal part of handle. Should that be the button to disengage gearshift so I can rev the engine without moving? I hope someone can clarify it for me. Thanks.

To do this you must pull the gear leaver out, then the movement of the leaver will only rev the engine

There are two main types of controls.

One with a button in the center of the handle pivot. Push button then advance controls for throttle only

Seond with no button. Grab handle by base, pull away from bulwark/gunwale, then advance controls for throttle only

Ok there aren't any button in the center of handle pivot so it must be the pull away method. I will try it the next time i'm in the boat. Thanks.
But just for curiosity then, do you know what the button underneath the handle is for? (marked at this picture)

Sorry i don't understand, "You should need to pull that trigger to get it out of the neutral detent". Is that meaning that the throttle shouldn't work at all, since the button doesn't work? The throttle handle works fine, it changes gears, it revs, and it goes to neutral. Only problem I have is to rev the engine without putting in gear. And this should be done by pulling the handle towards me by center without pushing any buttons, correct?

If you pop off the "button" / cap you will only find a screw that holds the handle to the main body of the shifter control.

You only need to pull the trigger to shift into gear and then back yo neutral

Went to the boat today, pulled the handle by center and was able to advance control for throttle only :) Thanks both of you. I have owned the boat for 4 months now and didn't knew this, ha ha, I'm feeling a little silly :)
