How to fill trim unit with fluid?

Guys, what's the best way to fill a tilt unit? My fill plug/hole is horizontal so I'm spilling about 75% of the oil. Makes me think I'm doing it wrong and there must be a better way.

It's a 2000 50HP.

Thanks!

Make sure the motor is level, and tilt it up all the way. Now let it sit 10 min to allow the air to bubble up. Refill, install plug and cycle it down and up. Repeat until all the air is out.

Be sure to use the trail locks to support the motor whenever the fill plug is out.

Thanks guys. I still don't understand why they made the hole face horizontally.

Last question, when u say lock it in the up position, how far up? The locks/supports only hold it about half as far up as it'll go. So that far or should I put it up as far as it'll go and put something like a tall sawhorse under it?

Thanks!

That's fine as long as it's supported when you have the fill plug out.

I just refilled mine, I used a turkey injection syringe, you can't do too much at once, but you won't spill much

I too used the same method but with a turkey baser with the bulb on the end. I bought it at the 99 cents store. ;)

I used a sprayer from a spray bottle screws right on the fluid top, then adjust to a stream. It take a while but you won't spill any. I've tried the turkey baster and still had spillage do to air triing to escape
