Ok folks I?m to the point where I need to repower the little tri-hull. I do not want a new engine. I was hoping to find a good used one. I have checked locally and none of the dealers here mess with used outboards. I have looked online through searches and found one 600+ miles away. I am looking for options here. I will travel to the east coast to find what I need. Any suggestions on used outboard dealers? I need a good 90hp outboard. Preferably with controls and harnesses and with power tilt and trim. I want to spend some money here, but new is just out of the question.

Surely there are some for sale nearer to you than that ???
Post a few "wanted" ads. That may help.

ahhhhh, TN. river. Yes, my Dad likes to fish around Savannah. The stripes were hitting like crazy there back in the Spring.

Anyway, about your motor situation. You may have to buy a whole rig. When my dad needed a motor, he found an old rig for sale with a pretty good motor on it. He burned the boat and sold the trailer.

Like Jasper said above....sometime the absolutely BEST deals on motors are the ones found hanging on the back of an otherwise crap boat.

Re: How to find an outboard?

I worry about shipping from a private sale on ebay; the good thing about craigslist is that you can search by locality. Lots of motors and cheap rigs for sale around here; check Virginia and North Carolina CL.

Budget Boats in Chesapeake Va deals in used motors; has a short warranty; could probably handle shipping for you.

I repowered an older boat this summer by buying a whole rig then selling the boat and trailer. It was priced cheap enough that I had enough in the "budget" for paying someone to switch and rig the motors and for other repairs I might need. I also ended up with a "rolling yard sale" from all the toys left on the boat. Bought boat motor trailer for $900. sold boat and trailer for $500 and old motor for $100 (both to the used boat yard who did the swap--no hassles.) So I kept a 70 hp OMC for $300 plus about $200 in toys.

Find someone who just wants the old boat gone from the yard. Check the compression and be done; everything else can be fixed.

Marinas and storage yards sell abandoned boats, too. Probably campgrounds as well. Lots are being dumped now due to the economy.
