How to flatten cylinder head suface on block/case? 2000 9.9hp

Had a low tide mud clogged intake, then overheat, then no start. Overheat was bad enough that it melted some plastic wires and blistered the paint. Anyway, diagnosed bad power pack. Replaced pack and started right up but would not go WOT. So I did compression test: 60/65psi. Was 95 before overheat.

Removed head (found out later I even melted the thermostat housing!) and gasket is leaking between cylinders. OK, have flattened the .015" warped head with silicon carbide paper on my table saw.

How do I go about flattening the block? without contaminating the cylinders/rings (which look OK with no scoring on walls)?

Thanks!

If it were me, I'd make a couple of wood circles as close to the cylinder diameter as possible. Add a small eye hook in the center to remove them later. Get some heavy grease, cover the edges of the wood and tap them into the cylinders. Add a thick layer of grease to the top of the wood to catch any metal filings.

Pick up a 12X12 piece of granite tile at one of the big box stores and either tape or use some spray adhesive to attach the silicon carbide paper to it. Granite tile is normally diamond honed to a flat surface and it won't flex. Use that to flatten the cylinder head. Once it's flat scrape off most of the grease, then set the engine with the cylinders facing down. Use brake cleaner to wash the rest of the grease out then pull the wood plugs and give it a final cleaning.

I like the wood circle idea! I have a wood lathe so will be able to get them near exact. I was thinking cardboard, but the wood with grease idea (grease is key!) is a good one. Thanks!

there is no need to flatten the block surface, because there is steel cylinder into aluminum housing. you dont have to grind this surface
